There are over 300 Temples in Chiang Mai (Wats) and the surrounding area, the majority of which are over 200 years old. Apart from being places of worship, the Temples in Chiang Mai help to remind us of the rich heritage of the Lanna Kingdom.
Architectural styles include Lanna, Burmese and Sri Lankan. Many of the Temples in Chiang Mai have fine examples of Naga (Dragon Serpents) stairways for protection and many beautiful woodcarvings and painted murals can also be found.
We have included details of some of the better known Temples in Chiang Mai but if you have the time it is well worth exploring some of the lesser known ones as well as there will always be a new treasure to discover.
Most of Chiang Mai's Temples are open daily with free entry although a small donation is always appreciated. Wat Prathat Doi Suthep makes a 30 Baht charge for all non-Thais. Remember that the temples are places of worship so please dress with respect.
